Last Flight Home by Micaela Kaibni Raen
Artist Statement: Last Flight Home speaks to the global loss of life for Queer/Trans communities, most of us surviving without even basic human rights. Globally our communities are forced to live lives not our own, forcing our love underground due to the threats of violence, imprisonment, or abusive conversion therapies. In addition, many Queer/Trans people are targeted and killed in violent military operations and Colonial Occupations. Many countries including Palestine are facing multi-generational ongoing genocide and countrywide health catastrophes. As a Palestinian American creator, I show the kites to represent many things; especially, our authentic selves as they go from grayscale to vibrant color. This artwork shows a sacred return…a beautiful pathway to homecoming with our ancestors. The kites’ transition to full color symbolizes that as we return, we become the fullest expression of ourselves. We are on our way to the stars’ embrace…our grandmothers who dreamed us into being. Their embrace is our true home.
